BREAKING NEWS - A-TECHNOLOGIES FACILITY ATTACKED

This is Trish Donaldson for WKSN News.

A-Technologies, a local Research and Development facility came under attack this morning by terrorists. Several explosions rocked the facility and heavy gunfire was reported.

Lone Star representative, Jane Hawkins told WKSN News that four heavily armed terrorists infiltrated the facility, planted a bomb and shot their way out.

The explosion claimed 12 lives and several security guards were killed by the terrorists as well.

DocWagon stated that the number of wounded reached well over 100.

ABC Cleaners representative, Kim Sutton told WKSN New that their van was hijacked earlier in the day and that the crew aboard was found murdered, close to their route. ABC Cleaners takes no responsibility for this act.

Lone Star asserted that it was doing everything in its power to get to the bottom of this terrible act.

Shiawase Corporation is currently offering a 1,000,000 nuyen reward for information leading to the arrest and/or capture of the as yet, unknown terrorists.

"1,000,000 nuyen"

Who's the lucky bastard with the intel?

I'm a big fan of million nuyen rewards... Still, something about this doesn't feel right to me.

I'm going to do some serious digging before I make any move and I advise the rest of you chummers to do the same.

The Tax Man is also fond of them, so be prepared to move that cash fast.

But, ya, something does smell wrong about this. Main thing is that, apparently, noone's taken credit for it.

And the Star, as always, is clueless. Maybe I should order A-Tech some Pizzas to get the Delivery Drivers there for some actual thought processes.

It sounds pretty sloppy. Why leave the cleaners actually dead when leaving them KO would give you just as much time to commit the crime? Why shoot your way in if you plan to just bomb the place?

I figure it's got to be an example of "Wet Noise" in action.

"Wet Noise"?

It's a criminology concept that comes out of signal theory. Basic concept is a combination of the information theory principal of "signal" and "noise" and the mafia concept of "wet work". The idea is that when you whack someone you send out a "wet signal" that can tell people who are listening for it what you were doing and what your motivations were. On the other hand, whacking irrelevent targets creates additional signals that are tangential at best to your true goals - which of course manifests as noise to anyone who is trying to listen to the signals you are creating.

Now the more important a target you're hitting, the louder and clearer a signal that'll be sending out. And thus, the more additional noise sources you'll have to create in order to sow meaningful confusion as to the content of the wet signal you are inadvertantly generating.

Thus, if you're taking something particularly important or bumping off an influential researcher, you'd have to take ou a whole lot of seemingly random bystanders to hide those motives. Assuming you're a professional who keeps up with the breakthroughs in obfuscation coming out of Latin America you'd want to take out say... 12 corporate employees, 4 security guards, and 2 cleaning company contractors if your target was a 2nd tier manager or the equivalent.

Unless I'm wrong: Wet noise a.k.a. the rope-a-dope. You fake left to go right. This was probably actually a datasteal or a big time extraction. Hell it could have been a wetwork if someone high profile was there at the time. But it's designed to look like a terror attack

We're all screaming "terrorists" but really this was probably anything but.

Normally, I'm a bigger fan of Hanlon's Razor (aka "cock up before conspiracy", as the lovely brits put it), than I am of signal theory, but in this case, I gotta admit things look fishy as hell. I hate keeping track of Shiawase's dealings and subsidiaries; they play it close to the vest and have their fingers in more pies than anyone but the azzies. Anyone got the lowdown on what this R&D group's real focus was? I'd owe you one, and I always pay my debts.

A-Technologies is into some pretty serious military grade cyberware.

I've seen some of their equipment first hand, it's state of the art. It wouldn't surprise me, if they were onto something big...

I'll see what I can dig up for you, Whipstitch.

Heads up from street level!

The buzz that we're picking up is that nothing went in, but something sure as frag kicked, bit, shot, and clawed its way... out!

Some digging was done because any team that clueless to go in guns blazing wouldn't last very long, and some of their toys sell very well after they're dead and gone. In fact, usually when some talking head mentions 'terrorists' what they mean is very loud and soon to be dead wannabe runners. The pro runners leave no trace, the pro terrorists just leave a smoking crater and a phone call. Trust me, we've seen it a hundred times before.

My nuyen's on some animal that they wired six ways from Sunday, forgetting that when you make something near indestructible and incredibly powerful... it doesn't often do as it's told!

A-Tech are up to what everyone else is up to, keeping the little guy down and a masses scared. I wouldn't bet against this being an inside job just to keep people on their toes and in compliance with daddy corp.

Bravo to those guys if this is real and those guys put the hurt on in the only place those souless corps drones can feel it - the bank balance.

At this point I'm pretty sure it was a data steal.

My sources say it was a snatch and grab: of a suit meatpuppet.

Anonymous said...

A suit meat puppet?

What the drek does that mean?

Anonymous said...

Well, either a guy that's been given a Persona-Soft for some Corp...

Or a really well-dressed prostitute with a memory-shunt.

My money's on the first, but that's only because I have some to blow. ;-P
